En Route

The landscapes in En Route explore the transitional and often overlooked spaces that permeate my daily life in southeastern Wisconsin as someone constantly on the move. These in-between moments serve as quiet reprieves from teaching, working in a microbiology lab, and handling the mundane demands of adulthood. Each scene that caught my attention while traveling between destinations was noted, and later captured through compromise with weather, having equipment on hand, and my work’s late policies. The resulting images illustrate the memento mori inherent to photography, reflecting the nature of the spaces we inhabit and their inevitability of change.
This series is an ongoing dialogue with the Wisconsin landscapes that I have photographed my whole life. Some locations are recognizable by locals, but many are gaps between destinations; the familiar, often mundane settings of everyday life, reshaped by time and human presence. I hope these spaces in between and spaces adjacent to destinations that have caught my eye, will spark you to consider your own sights. To relook at what has become mundane from constant travel and view, and to consider the fleeting nature of the landscapes we are surrounded by.
