Nic Umbs is an image-maker and educator raised and based near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, attaining his B.S. in biological sciences in 2018 and his M.F.A. in studio arts in 2021. His work uses digital, film, alternative processes, video, and applied scientific/mathematical techniques to solve image-making problems. Within his art practice, his research focuses on interpersonal relationships and the idea of family. Editorial work he has done includes the documentation of theatre performances, gallery art shows, weddings, and cosplay gatherings, among other events. He is currently at UW-Milwaukee as a Lecturer and Senior Photography Technician in the Peck School of the Arts, and served as the Interim Area Head for Photography & Imaging for the 2025-2026 school year. Additionally, he is a Lecturer in the College of Public Health at UWM and an Adjunct Instructor at Carroll University. His concept-based work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
